Ian Ridenhour kicks off ninth season of Concerts on the Creek

first_imgRidenhour’s music is an energetic and dynamic celebration of rhythm and lyrics. He writes smart, piano-driven alternative rock music with pop sensibilities and a dark streak, or as Sav Buist of The Accidentals puts it: “like Jack White and Ben Folds had a baby.”After establishing himself in North Dakota fronting his own band and playing with others like Tigirlily (winning a North Dakota Music Award at age 14), Ian moved to the Asheville, N.C., area, where he developed a devoted following. His first album, “Quietly Making Noise,” was followed in 2016 by “Cry About It,” a dark pop-rock tour de force that juxtaposes infectious hooks and complex arrangements with raw, real-life lyrics that engage with the psyche’s shadowy side. The video for “Dancing Children,” one of the two vanguard singles from “Cry About It,” won top honors at the 2017 Music Video Asheville Awards.“Ribcage,” the new EP, was released in January 2018. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios and produced by Nomatic Studio, the album features the talents of Jacob Rodriguez and Justin Ray (of Michael Buble), Asheville artist Brie Capone, and others. “You Help Me Fall Asleep,” the first single off the album, will be released on December 1, 2017 with an accompanying video produced by All Around Artsy.Bolstered by his powerhouse band, Ian’s performances are, as the Mountain Xpress says, “dynamic, with hooky melodies, frenzied riffs, and kinetic, danceable energy.” As well as playing festivals across the southeast and headlining listening rooms in western North Carolina, Ian has shared the stage with The Accidentals, BJ Leiderman, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Third Eye Blind, among others.PopMatters says that Ian is “easily one the more diverse piano-centered rock acts of modern times,” which is perhaps what jazz legend Jimmy Cobb meant when he said of Ian, “in a couple of minutes, he’s gonna be a monster.”Concerts on the Creek are held every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 7-9 p.m., at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva. The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series. These events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Please bring a chair or blanket. Food trucks will be at most of this year’s events.Concerts on the Creek is a Blue Ridge Music Trail partner.Check www.mountainlovers.com or Facebook for updates and more information.last_img read more

Connected by Traditions

Posted in mzibuqwe on December 18th, 2019

first_imgCreating a winning team spiritA company’s traditions are an investment that pays in human dividends. Banking on people more than products or technology to ultimately make a difference in the world is something that separates the mediocre from the extraordinary. A bold statement, to be sure, but what does it REALLY mean?In the simplest of terms it means that we are relational beings, and as such, all work and earning and paychecks and accomplishments are a means to that end. Many years down the road companies and icons will rise and fall, products and services will emerge and fade, but people and their relationships with one another will still be going strong. The companies that recognize their worth in terms of the difference they have made and will make in the lives of PEOPLE—be it their customers or their employees—are the ones that are the real winners no matter what the day’s ledger may indicate, and connecting that ideology with practical day to day business is the challenge. That’s where the importance of a company’s traditions comes into play. You might have two employees that work next to each other on an assembly line, or two department supervisors that sit together in the same weekly meeting, yet none has ever really connected with the other outside of the paradigm of the job. A softball team, planning a company picnic, or selecting an outstanding employee to receive some sort of special recognition are all good examples of company traditions that can bring people together in an environment that communicates the company’s care for its people and allows them to connect with one another in ways that don’t typically occur in the usual workday. The potential worth of such traditions should give pause to every forward thinking business person. The value of people must be communicated by means other than just a paycheck. If you want employees to operate as a cohesive team—and you want to reap the rewards that come from that cohesion—you need to recognize the role traditions play in adding an immeasurable component to bottom line profits. They create opportunities that foster relationships and strengthen the foundations that your business will rely upon for many years to come. Your challenge?  Create a new high impact tradition in the next 30 days!last_img read more

5 Cloud-based Operating Systems That Are Still Standing

Posted in dnxjvxyy on December 16th, 2019

first_imgThe announcement of the official Google Chromebooks has rekindled interest in Google’s Chrome OS. But you don’t need to wait to rent a Chromebook if you want to use the operating system. People have been running Chromium OS on netbooks for quite some time. And Chrome/Chromium isn’t the only option for a cloud-oriented OS – we covered a few that were already available as of November of last year. One of those OSes, Joli OS, has gone a step further and started offering a cloud-hosted version of its environment. You can access your Joli OS desktop from almost any browser. But it’s not alone in the cloud-based OS world. Many Web desktops have come and gone in the past few years. Here’s a look at a few that are still around.CloudMe 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market eyeOS has been around since 2005, and has been steadily updated since then. It’s written primarily in PHP and JavaScript, and is open source so you can download and and install it on your own Web server. It does use some Flash, but it’s not required. It has a mobile-optimized version that enables access to files, but it’s not the desktop experience and documents can’t be edited.Glide Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Glide is a Flash-based Web desktop. It’s also been around since 2005. It has the usual features: an office suite, photo editor, IM client, etc. It’s big advantage is that it offers 30GB of free storage space. A premium account, which costs $50 a year, will buy you 250GB of storage. It also has the ability to sync files Windows, Macintosh and Linux desktops.Glide has both mobile-optimized site and an iPad-optimized site that provide a relatively complete set of features, including the ability to create and edit documents. What it doesn’t seem to offer, however, is the ability to access your files offline from a mobile device.Joli OS CloudMe, formerly known as icloud, is a storage-oriented Web desktop. It offers 3GB of storage for free, and Web applications such as a Zoho-based office suite, a photo editor, an instant messenger, a Twitter client, games and more. It has a mobile client available Android and iOS and a mobile-optimized website, allowing you to access your files from your phone or tablet but not the full desktop environment. One big disadvantage is that the Web desktop environment is a Java applet, and it’s slow and buggy.eyeOScenter_img Related Posts Joli OS used to be called JoliCloud. Now JoliCloud refers to a service from Joli OS that allows you to access your Joli OS desktop from the Web. The desktop version is a Linux-based OS optimized for netbooks. The Web-based version is written in HTML5 and works from most browsers, including the iPad. An Android version is in the works. However, since the JoliOS desktop mostly just provides shortcuts to Web applications, the Web-hosted version feels like more of a hosted bookmark system than a full OS.You can find our past coverage of Joli OS here.NetvibesNetvibes takes a different approach but offering a number of widgets arranged in a dashboard. We’ve covered Netvibes often. The company now seems to be more dedicated to creating enterprise dashboard products than consumer dashboards.Other AlternativesSome might find this approach old fashioned, considering the availability of services like Box and Dropbox – or more importantly, Google Docs. Google Docs has been expanding its storage space, and its functionality. Is there really a need to mimic a desktop operating system when what you really need is universal access to your files? The trend towards cloud storage is reflected in the marketing materials from the cloud OS vendors. CloudMe has been emphasizing its cloud storage capabilities over its Web desktop in recent months.Glide is the most impressive of the lot, but without offline mobile access, I can’t think of a reason I’d use it. In 2008 a the Web desktop YouOS closed its doors because its own developers couldn’t find a use for it themselves. What do you think? Is there any future in the Web-based OS?Lead photo by Michael Roper klint finley Tags:#cloud#saas Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more
