The Big One

first_imgWHILE recent rumblings out of Chatsworth have Southern California residents speculating about when the “Big One” might strike, Peruvians got the haunting answer to that question Thursday morning. That’s when an 8.0-magnitude earthquake unleashed massive devastation, killing at least 500 people. Massive parts of the country now have no power, no clean water and little hope. This is the constant danger that comes with living in seismologically sensitive areas. We know that it’s not a matter of if, but when, we will experience such destruction, and a quake even more severe than the Northridge Earthquake of 1994. When that time comes, we will depend greatly on the kindness and charity of others. Food and money will pour in from around the country and the world to ease our plight. For now, thankfully, it’s our turn to be on the giving end of the help line. Peru needs our support, and we need to provide it. To contribute to Peruvian quake relief, call Operation USA at (800) 678-7255, or go to www.opusa.org. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
