This week, a recruit – who Fleck didn’t land – called into question some of the recruiting practices Fleck employs.Jirehl Brock, a four-star running back from Quincy, Illinois, currently has 13 offers – including one from Minnesota. But Brock chose Iowa State earlier this month. He explained his decision in a recent interview with the Herald-Whig.Brock dropped some interesting quotes about what it was like being recruited by Minnesota. In short, he was a bit intimidated by Fleck’s tactics.Brock says that Fleck and his staff texted him every 30 minutes during his recruitment. He said he heard some stories from other recruits too regarding what Fleck might do to land his commitment:“When Coach Little says people were calling every hour, it was (Minnesota) calling,” he said. “They would text every 30 minutes. It was a lot to take in. You don’t want to be rude about it. You try to be as nice as possible. They were the hardest school to say no to.“Before I took my visit, I heard they would put you in the office and lock the doors and put an hourglass upside down and say, ‘You have this much time to commit.’ Good thing they never did that to me. Talking to Coach Fleck in his office with my parents, it was really tempting to commit because of the approach he takes. He’s a really good guy, don’t get me wrong, but he knows how to make somebody intimidated.”College football coaches often go overboard to land the players they want. Recruiting is everything in college football – it’s almost impossible to win consistently without top quality talent. Still, this seems like a new level. It’ll be interesting to see if any other recruits echo Brock’s story. The Golden Gophers, at the moment, have 21 commits for the 2019 season.Minnesota, in Fleck’s first year, finished with a 5-7 record. The Golden Gophers open with New Mexico State next month.last_img
