Iraq UN envoy welcomes Kurdish regional leaders Baghdad visit

Martin Kobler, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, welcomed Kurdistan Region President Masud Barzani’s visit to hold talks on outstanding issues in Baghdad with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi and other political leaders. “This second meeting within a month is an encouraging step,” Mr. Kobler said in a press release from the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), which added that the meeting confirms “there is political will to address outstanding issues between the centre and the region through direct dialogue and in accordance with the constitution.”“I hope that these discussions will improve the relations between the federal Government and the Kurdistan Region’s government, and that the outcomes will impact positively on the Iraqi people,” he said in the release, and added: “The UN continues to stand ready to provide support to this process.”Today’s visit follows by less than a month the first-ever trip to Erbil of Iraq’s Premier for a landmark meeting with Kurdish leaders, which Mr. Kobler hailed as “a positive step in the right direction.”At that time, a spokesman for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement in which the UN chief welcomed “all recent dialogue initiatives” between Iraqi federal Government and Kurdish region officials. “[Mr. Ban] urges all parties to redouble their efforts to ensure that the momentum of national reconciliation is not lost to those groups that strive to reignite sectarian violence in Iraq,” that statement said. read more

Ohio States Jaamal Berry named suspect in alleged assault Gene Smith aware

28 September 0

Ohio State football player Jaamal Berry has been named a suspect in an alleged assault that occurred Friday morning, according to a report from the Columbus Police Department. It is the second incident involving Berry allegedly assaulting another individual in less than a month. The latest incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. Friday on Vine Street, behind North Market, and involved a 21-year-old non-OSU student. The victim was “struck in the face with a closed fist,” according to the Columbus police report.Berry, a redshirt sophomore running back, was with another African-American male and was allegedly yelling at the victim and his friend, after the victim was struck by a car. The victim, who The Lantern has chosen not to name at this time, said that Berry and his friend were yelling vulgar remarks at him. After asking why they were yelling, the victim said that Berry crossed the street and punched his friend, and then punched him in the face with a closed fist.Berry was later identified by a witness, and the alleged victim said he confirmed Berry’s identity when shown a picture by police. The victim’s mother, who requested anonymity, said she spoke with Gene Smith, OSU athletic director, about the incident on Friday afternoon.Smith said that the athletic department is aware that Berry might have been involved in an altercation.“We have not been informed by anyone else that charges have been filed,” Smith told The Lantern Monday. “If Jaamal is charged, he will be suspended pending the outcome of the case.”Berry and other witnesses involved did not immediately respond to The Lantern‘s requests for comment. On Sept. 28, Berry was involved in what an OSU police report described as an “assault” on another student. Berry was admitted and released from the OSU Medical Center and no charges were filed. read more

Sat nav rip off as owners of modern cars face annual £300

25 September 0

first_imgAs modern cars become festooned with evermore gadgets, the in-built sat nav is now a standard fixture. However, as they become indispensable for driving, many motorists may not realise they are far from inexpensive. Indeed, owners face unforeseen charges down the line should they wish to have the most up-to-date road maps on their device. An investigation by Auto Express magazine found that the cost of updating the in-built sat nav system varies by hundreds of pounds, depending on the make, model and age of your car, even though most get the mapping software from the same provider.Owners of older Jaguar XFs pay up to £316 for sat nav updates, while those for Ford cars vary from £81.90 to £159, depending on model and age, the research found, with those driving earlier editions paying most.Subaru vehicles operating on an old system face an update cost of £300, while the charge for newer Subarus with SD-card sat navs is £100 after the three free updates run out. Car manufacturers claim the fees are often associated with the software packages they pay for as well as the amount of labour that is involved in updating a sat nav.Drivers hoping to use their mobile phone GPS as a short cut should beware that they may be prosecuted if caught driving while on the phone.HERE Technologies, a data provider, said that while brands receive regular map updates, “it’s up to manufacturers to choose the frequency of updates for individual models and whether to offer them for free”.      Many car firms charges drivers down the road to update their built-in sat navs Nissan, which charges up to £196 depending on the model, says its latest European mapping software adds 1,439,809km of roads, new street names, plus better junction information, while drivers of new Fords get free updates for seven years. Owners of new cars often benefit from free updates, with makers such as Volvo and Volkswagen now including lifetime updates on their latest models.Drivers of older Volvo models have to cough up £125 to bring sat nav maps up to date. However, not all car-makers have adopted this policy. Audi will give five free updates to owners of vehicles with its Navigation Plus systems, after which they will be charged – albeit the fee has yet to be determined. Preeclampsia kills 76000 pregnant women each year but warning signs can go

first_imgAwareness vitalEleni Tsigas, a preeclampsia survivor and executive director of the Preeclampsia Foundation in the US is in Ireland this week to meet with government and industry parties to highlight the need for greater awareness of the condition in Ireland. There is currently no representative body or organisation in Ireland that acts as a voice for preeclampsia awareness, support and information for preeclampsia survivors. For the mother, it can lead to acute problems of the liver, kidneys, brain and clotting system and survivors of preeclampsia have increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases later in life.A quarter of all babies born to mothers with preeclampsia are growth restricted and a third are born prematurely. Being born growth restricted predisposes children to high blood pressure, diabetes and heart conditions in adult life.Save livesTsigas said that making people more aware of the condition in Ireland could save lives, adding that while most may think of it as a condition from the past, such as what the fictional Downton Abbey character, Lady Sybil, who died of during childbirth, it still affects women to this day.I am delighted to be working with the Irish government and industry here, particularly the INFANT Research Centre and Metabolomic Diagnostics, to help raise symptom awareness and encourage more people, male and female, carers and friends, to recognise this potentially fatal illness. The  Irish National Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (INFANT) Centre based at Cork University Maternity Hospital is working on an early diagnostic test that has the potential to revolutionise prenatal care globally. La rascasse volante un envahisseur marin redoutable

La rascasse volante un envahisseur marin redoutable

20 September 0

Le 18 juillet 2013 à 19:22 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Tackling Misconceptions About Hunger How Does it Really Affect us and How

Tackling Misconceptions About Hunger How Does it Really Affect us and How

16 September 0

first_imgWe all know hunger is a global issue. We’ve seen the news, pictures and tragic stories of kids across the world that are unable to make it past their fifth birthday. But, how much do we really understand about what world hunger means and how we should address it?A great article published by Global Citizen titled Hunger—10 Things You Thought You Knew, takes a quick look at 10 myths about hunger. A notable point of the article is that world hunger affects us all on a greater level than many may realize and is more than just a health issue:“Hunger slows progress on other important areas that connect nations, including security…economies suffer, people fight, and farmers can’t grow their crops effectively. Hungry children struggle to focus, learn, or even attend school…making it hard for them to contribute to the growth of the national economy…” Myth #4, “Resolving Hunger Means Ensuring People Have Enough to Eat”, brings up an important point that the World Soy Foundation (WSF) has recognized as key to reducing malnutrition. Noting the article’s example: if someone that’s hungry is given three meals of rice a day, they probably won’t be hungry in the way we understand the word, but will they have the right nutrients needed for healthy development, mentally and physically? The answer to that is NO.As a member of the soy family, you know the power of soy in providing protein—which is an essential part to a healthy diet. Soybeans contain all three of the macro-nutrients required for good nutrition and are the only common plant food that contains complete protein and all critical amino acids needed for human health! In the recent past, the Foundation provided nearly 550,000 soy-based meals to over 19,000 people in developing countries, including young school children from Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras—allowing them the ability to focus and learn at school. We were also able to educate school, orphanage, and family caregivers on the preparation and importance of soy for a healthy diet. To join more than 1,000 farmers that support the Foundation’s mission of reducing malnutrition through the power of soy, simply calculate the value of an acre of soybeans in your operation (yield multiplied by price) and give the gift of protein today! To make a donation, click “Donate Now,” visit www.worldsoyfoundation.org or send your check to:World Soy Foundation12125 Woodcrest Executive Drive, Suite 100St. Louis, MO 63141To read the full article from Global Citizen, visit their webpage here. Banking diploma exam on leaked questions

Steam game sharing discovered within beta update

Steam game sharing discovered within beta update

01 September 0

first_imgWith the narrative we’ve all been subject to recently regarding the Xbox One’s efforts to curb used game sales as well as trading games, it appears Steam may be adding a long-desired feature that would separate it from the Xbox One fiasco. In a recent update for the beta Steam client, a bit of code was discovered that suggests Steam will finally add game sharing to its venerable service.Through all the goodwill Steam has built up over the years, people tend to overlook some glaring issues that the service has that would cause an uproar if they were inherent to some other service. Because the games are digital, no means were created for the games to be treated like retail copies — you can’t sell them back, and you can’t trade them. Though that might sound difficult to enact with a digital product, Amazon easily employed a book-lending service (appeasing customers), and left the ability to allow a book to be lent up to the publishers (appeasing faceless corporations that probably hate you). Now, at a time that is conveniently right when Microsoft garnered hate from the entire gaming consumer base for not allowing game trading, Steam seems like it is about to finally introduce it. As you can see in the highlighted text above, unearthed on NeoGAF, there’s no mistake that the intention is straight-up game sharing, similar to how Netflix only allows a certain amount of devices to stream at once. The code even comes complete with a Netflix-like notice, alerting the users that a game is currently in use. Now, don’t get too excited yet, as this code came with a beta update, so there’s no telling if game sharing is a feature that will be officially implemented anytime soon — or at all. However, the mere existence of it within the update certainly suggests that Valve is looking to distance itself from the vitriol Microsoft just dived right into.last_img read more

Researchers develop algorithm to maximize friendship acceptance by strangers on social networks

31 August 0

first_imgThe running example. Credit: arXiv:1302.7025 Journal information: arXiv Social network sites work based on the concept of one person sending a friend request to another. If the request is accepted, the two become “friends” which means they gain access to each other’s privately posted information. Quite often, one person wishes to become “friends” with someone else on the network that they don’t know—a celebrity perhaps, or a person of influence in business. Sending a friend request to such a person generally fails, however, because the person getting the request doesn’t have any reason to accept. Celebrities rarely if ever accept friend requests from people they don’t know, for example, if they did, their friend list would become unmanageable, not to mention useless—the idea behind a friend list is to keep in touch with friends, after all.But still, sometimes it would be beneficial to somehow manipulate a stranger into accepting a friend request by fooling them into believing that there are mutual acquaintances. Unfortunately, social networks don’t offer a way to make that happen. In this new effort, the research team has devised a way to do it, by creating an algorithm that offers the names of people to friend to create an eventual pathway to the intended target. As more and more of these friends accept friend requests, (because they appear to be in the same social circle), it becomes more and more likely that the actual intended target will accept a friend request as it appears to them that they and the requester have many common friends, and thus exist in the same social circle. There is one caveat here, and that is the algorithm only works if implemented by the social network itself because they are the only ones that can analyze the structure of friend relationships between different individuals who don’t know each other or have any friends in common. There is also the problem of figuring out why a social network such as Facebook would ever possibly want to add such a feature. It would seem contrary to their most basic philosophy—to allow “friends” to keep in touch. The idea, as they describe in their paper they’ve uploaded to the preprint server arXiv, is to offer intelligent suggestions of other people to friend to create a mutual social circle of friends, which will increase the odds of the ultimate target agreeing to a friend request. © 2013 Phys.org How well do you know your friends? More information: Maximizing Acceptance Probability for Active Friending in On-Line Social Networks, arXiv:1302.7025 [cs.SI] arxiv.org/abs/1302.7025AbstractFriending recommendation has successfully contributed to the explosive growth of on-line social networks. Most friending recommendation services today aim to support passive friending, where a user passively selects friending targets from the recommended candidates. In this paper, we advocate recommendation support for active friending, where a user actively specifies a friending target. To the best of our knowledge, a recommendation designed to provide guidance for a user to systematically approach his friending target, has not been explored in existing on-line social networking services. To maximize the probability that the friending target would accept an invitation from the user, we formulate a new optimization problem, namely, emph{Acceptance Probability Maximization (APM)}, and develop a polynomial time algorithm, called emph{Selective Invitation with Tree and In-Node Aggregation (SITINA)}, to find the optimal solution. We implement an active friending service with SITINA in Facebook to validate our idea. Our user study and experimental results manifest that SITINA outperforms manual selection and the baseline approach in solution quality efficiently.via Arxiv Bloglast_img read more

Drunken Trees – Two Surreal Forests that Abandon the Laws of Gravity

30 August 0

first_imgAmong the most unusual forests in the world, there is one in Russia called the Dancing Forest as well as one in Poland called the Crooked Forest. They appear somewhat similar, containing an array of pine trees marked for their strange growth, and many similar legends and theories have arisen to explain this remarkable occurrence. They are twisted and swirling, forming curls and spirals — an extraordinary sight.Crooked Forest, Poland. Photo by Artur Strzelczyk CC BY-SA 3.0Poland’s Crooked Forest, near the town of Gryfino in West Pomerania has  around 100 swirly pine trees planted sometime around 1930 (when the territory was still part of Germany).Crooked Forest, Poland. Photo by Kengi CC0 1.0Many people believe that some kind of tool or technique was used to purposefully make the trees grow this way, but these remain theories and the specific methods are not known. It has also been surmised that the trees may have been artificially deformed to create naturally curved wood for articles of furniture or boat building. Others think it may been a particularly vicious snowstorm which shaped the trees this way, but again, only theories exist.Dancing forest, Curonian Spit, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. As well in the Dancing Forest of Russia, the reasons why the trees have grown this way are unknown. It’s unlikely they were watered with vodka, but among locals, this forest is also known as the Drunken Forest. The Dancing Forest or the Drunken Forest, as you please, can be found on the Curonian Spit — a narrow sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea.Curonian Spit in Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia). Dancing Forest. The sandspit straddles the border between Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave overlooking the Baltic Sea, and Lithuania.Strange tree formations in the Dancing Forest, Russia.People planted the pines in the 1960s to help maintain the stability of the sand dunes. It is precisely this wobbly terrain that is considered as one possible reason for their crooked and deformed growth.Pine trees on the Curonian Spit in Kaliningrad Oblast.Several other theories have been put forward to explain the strange growth of the pine trees.Dancing Forest.Among the more accepted scientific ones is that an infection of the pine shoot moth — a pine plantation pest whose larvae burrow into and feed on developing buds — when the trees were very young could be the culprit.Image of dancing forest at Curonian spit in Kaliningrad region of Russia. While that may have caused the trees to initially have atypical growth, the pines as any other plant continued growing upwards, chasing the sunbeams.Their growth was improved in the process, but the early anomalies remained, giving the distorted tree forms.Dancing Forest. Photo by Юлия Антонова CC BY-SA 4.0Alternative theories point the finger to forceful winds, or perhaps humans who somehow did this to the pines on purpose. These strange trees have not failed to capture the imagination of local folks.Dancing forest, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. One legend relates to a Prussian prince who one day was wandering in the forest when he heard an irresistible melody. The heart-warming music was coming from a beautiful young girl who was playing the lyre, seated in a forest clearing.Drunk forest in Curonian Spit, Russia. The prince was persuaded and their story ends with a happy union. There are also some less joyful superstitious explanations of how the strange tree growth happened.Photo by Aleksandr Chazov CC BY-SA 4.0Some people believe that the forest is a place of confrontation between good and evil forces, and their energies are responsible for the contorted pines. The existence of so many explanations hints at how special this place is.Dancing forest, Curonian Spit, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.Unsurprisingly the Dancing Forest is part of a protected area. In 2000, the entire Curonian Spit, covering almost 61 miles, has been proclaimed a Unesco World Heritage Site and there is more to its curiosities than its strange forest. The region is part of an ancient migration route for birds. Each year millions of birds pass through the area on their way to reach Asia. In 1901, the world’s first ornithologist station was founded here and is still carrying out research on our feathered friends.Read another story from us: One of the Most Beautiful and Historic Falkland Islands is Now for SaleBesides birds, abundant wildlife keeps company with the strange crooked pines.
