first_imgPatricia Reaney, ReutersMove over Black Widow and step aside She-Hulk: Marvel Comics is introducing a new superhero – a 16-year-old Muslim-American girl named Kamala Khan, to reflect the growing diversity of its readers. The character, who will be the new Ms. Marvel, lives with her conservative Pakistani parents and brother in New Jersey. She will make her debut in January and appear in a monthly series starting on February 6.“It is so important that we tell stories that reflect the ever-changing world that we live in and being a Muslim-American is so much a part of that,” said Sana Amanat, the series editor, who also worked on Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men comic books. Although the inspiration for the new series came from a desire to explore the Muslim-American experience, she said it isn’t about what it means to be a Muslim, Pakistani or American.“It is about a young girl who is figuring out who she is and what happens when these really extraordinary things happen to her,” she added in an interview.Khan is a big comic book fan and after she discovers her superhuman power – being a polymorph and able to lengthen her arms and legs and change her shape – she takes on the name of Ms. Marvel. The title had previously belonged to Carol Danvers, a character Khan had always had admired.“It pays homage to the legacy character,” said Amanat.Positive responseThe idea for the new superhero stemmed from a casual conversation Amanat had with her senior editor, Steve Wacker, about her own experiences growing up as a Muslim-American.“He was interested in the dilemma I faced as a young girl and the next day he came in and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a superhero that was for all the little girls that grew up just like you, and who are growing up just like you are today, and to create a character they can be inspired by,’” Amanat said.Writer G. Willow Wilson, a convert to Islam, and artist Adrian Alphona are the team working on the project, which started about 18 months ago.Wilson said she wrote the character as a true-to-life person so that people, particularly young women, can relate to her.Khan experiences the usual teenage angst, feelings of confusion and being an outsider, dealing with the expectations of her parents and problems at high school.“It’s for all the geek girls out there, and everybody else who’s ever looked at life on the fringe,” Wilson said in a statement.Kahn is not the first Muslim-American character in the superhero world, which has been largely dominated by white males, but Amanat said she is being pushed to the forefront of the Marvel universe.“People have been mostly positive about it,” she said, adding that the real test will come early next year when the series begins.Amanat believes the options for the new character, and others like her, are limitless.“We are always trying to upend expectations to an extent but our point is to always reflect the world outside our window, and we are looking through a lot more windows right now,” she said.last_img read more

UN meeting opens with calls for global support to help millions of

12 October 0

Hundreds of concerned participants from governments, aid organizations and United Nations bodies gathered in Geneva today at a conference organized by the UN refugee agency in a bid to find ways to address the humanitarian crisis facing millions of people uprooted by the conflict in Iraq, hearing calls for a sustained, comprehensive and coordinated international response to their plight. “The humanitarian dimension of the problem can no longer be overlooked,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres told representatives from more than 60 nations at the opening of a two-day UNHCR conference on the humanitarian needs of nearly 4 million refugees and displaced people in Iraq and surrounding countries. He said their “needs are as obvious as the moral imperative to help.” Urging results from the more than 450 participants from governments and international and non-governmental organizations attending, he said: “All of us – representatives of governments, international organizations and civil society – are now compelled to act.” Mr. Guterres noted that while Iraq probably had the highest media profile of any conflict in the world today, “too little attention has been devoted to the humanitarian tragedy looming in the shadows.” In a video message to the conference, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Iraq’s neighbours for their support, but pointed out that these countries “are finding it ever harder to sustain and provide basic services, such as health care and schooling.” He voiced hope that the conference would galvanize international support to provide Iraqis more protection and assistance. “And I hope it will mobilize resources for establishing much needed protection space,” he added. “For neighbouring countries, this means keeping borders open, and upholding the principle of no forced return. It means ensuring access to health and education services. For other receiving countries, it means continuing to provide asylum or other forms of protection,” he said, adding that the international community must foster resettlement opportunities for the most vulnerable.According to UNHCR, the conflict in Iraq has caused the most significant displacement in the Middle East since 1948, with one in eight Iraqis driven from their homes. Some 1.9 million Iraqis are currently displaced inside the country and up to 2 million others have fled abroad. “It is the largest urban caseload UNHCR has ever dealt with,” Mr. Guterres said in a reference to Syria, Jordan and other nearby countries. “But those host communities are straining under this extraordinary burden, while the suffering of the displaced grows by the day.” He added that: “The generosity of host countries must be matched by that of the entire international community.” Many Iraqis were displaced prior to the fall of the previous regime in 2003. Between 2003 and 2005, more than 300,000 Iraqis had returned home to begin rebuilding their lives, he said. But the trend has now dramatically reversed, particularly since the Samarra bombing in February 2006. About 750,000 people are estimated to have fled their homes since that incident, with up to 50,000 more displaced each month. The High Commissioner stressed the humanitarian focus of the meeting, but also noted that humanitarian problems are “symptoms of a disease whose cure can only be political.”The Secretary-General pledged the UN’s continued efforts to provide humanitarian assistance, while agreeing that a long-term solution is necessary. “Only a secure, politically stable and economically prosperous Iraq can reverse the tide of displacement. And only through assistance from the international community in this difficult period can Iraq fulfil its enormous human and economic potential.” 17 April 2007Hundreds of concerned participants from governments, aid organizations and United Nations bodies gathered in Geneva today at a conference organized by the UN refugee agency in a bid to find ways to address the humanitarian crisis facing millions of people uprooted by the conflict in Iraq, hearing calls for a sustained, comprehensive and coordinated international response to their plight. read more

Posner said that the U.S is also particularly interested in efforts to demilitarize areas in the north of the country. Posner’s office had this week released the annual human rights report for 201i which had a section on Sri Lanka. The report noted several incidents of human rights abuses in 2011 in Sri Lanka and the failure by the government to address some concerns. “Our hope is that the government will act quickly to respond to a number of the recommendations in the lessons learned commission and those are subjects we discussed with the Foreign Minister during his recent visit,” Posner told the Colombo Gazette. Antiterrorism used as excuse to clamp down on religion UN report

06 October 0

The terrorist attacks against the United States on 11 September 2001 have been used by many countries as an excuse for a crackdown on religion, especially in Central Asia, according to a new United Nations report released today. The interim report to the General Assembly by the Special Rapporteur of the UN Commission on Human Rights on freedom of religion or belief, Abdelfattah Amor, stresses that all human rights are interdependent with democracy and development and calls for a focus on preventive steps against terrorism by addressing the root causes of extremism rather than the later acts.”Generally speaking, the Special Rapporteur notes that in many cases, rather than protecting the right to freedom of religion or belief, States have used the pretext of security in response to terrorist threats to limit the exercise of that right,” the reports says.”Many States have taken the simplistic view that, since religions are at the root of many terrorist acts, the most direct means of preventing such acts is to limit the exercise of religion, and have focussed their genuinely or purportedly counter-terrorist activities on limiting the exercise of civil and political rights, including the right to freedom of religion and belief,” it adds.Noting a new upsurge in administrative regulations on freedom of religion, the report states: “Many States, especially those in Central Asia, have used the compulsory registration of religious groups and the imposition of specific regulations governing them to restrict the exercise of freedom of religion or belief.” In some cases the attacks on the United States “have been used to legitimate, or even to strengthen, pre-existing policies for the persecution of religious groups.”The report says violence against members of religious minorities has become increasingly common and in this regard “many States have not met their human rights obligations.”Looking to the future, it notes countries have focussed on restricting civil and political rights at the expense of economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to education, which is essential to for teaching a culture of tolerance and non-discrimination and is part of an overall prevention policy. read more

Mali Dire humanitarian situation grave security concerns challenge fragile peace

Bintou Keita, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations in Africa, also apprised the Council of the alarming security situation in the central and northern areas of the African State, saying it was “of grave concern,” and provided “a major challenge” to implementing the UN-backed 2015 peace agreement. The Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali was signed in June 2015 by the Coordination des Mouvements de l’Azawad armed group, following its signature in that May by the Government and a third party, the Plateforme coalition of armed groups. The Malian Government has been seeking to restore stability and rebuild following a series of setbacks since early 2012, including a military coup d’état, renewed fighting between Government forces and Tuareg rebels, and the seizure of its northern territory by radical extremists. She flagged the “very difficult conditions” under which the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali’s (MINUSMA) peacekeepers and the Malian defense and security forces continue to serve, saying that “far too often, they pay the ultimate price” in support of peace and stability across the country. Mali continues to be the most dangerous place in the world to wear the UN’s blue helmet.“Asymmetric attacks continue to target peacekeepers, national and international forces, and increasingly civilians”, she asserted. The UN official recalled the 21 December attack against MINUSMA, which she said, “indicated the determination of extremist groups and spoilers to prevent the Mission from implementing its mandate.”,Ms. Keita also reminded the Council of last year’s “significant increase” in the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), saying that mission’s UNMAS continent (UN Mine Action Service) was supporting the authorities, including with advice, training and specialized equipment to mitigate their risks.“We remain concerned about the further deterioration of the security situation in the centre where intercommunal violence, instrumentalized by extremist armed groups, has intensified over the past months,” she continued, spotlighting a deadly New Year’s Day attack. She said MINUSMA was working with the Government to respond to the rapidly evolving situation and protect civilians.,UN 2013 map of Mali., by UN Department of Field Support/Cartographic SectionClick here to enlarge.,Ms. Keita stressed the importance of the parties to the peace agreement keeping positive momentum going, and making “meaningful progress, without further delay”.“Addressing the challenges facing Mali must take into account the complex cross-border dynamics and drivers of conflict occurring within the broader regional context – Bintou Keita“Addressing the challenges facing Mali must take into account the complex cross-border dynamics and drivers of conflict occurring within the broader regional context,” she stressed, reiterating the Secretary-General’s call on national, regional and international actors “to redouble their efforts to tackle the multiple threats facing Mali and the Sahel region.”She assured the Council of MINUSMA’s continued commitment to supporting the parties in implementing the peace agreement. For her part, Kamissa Camara, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, highlighted that security measures are not enough when terrorist groups are working “relentlessly” to destroy social cohesion, weaken the State and extend their territorial control. She said that the Government was currently working to build a national consensus to find “solutions shared by the whole Malian nation.”Meanwhile, as the Council was meeting, it was reported that gunmen had attacked two villages in the country’s central Menaka region near the border with Niger, killing at least 20 people – further underscoring the country’s volatile security situation. In response to the briefing, the Council issued a statement welcoming the positive achievements while expressing “significant”  impatience over persistent delays in implementing key provisions of the Agreement. They conveyed their growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Central Mali and strongly condemned the continued attacks.Read more here. read more

Anyone Could Win The AFC North — Except The Browns

28 September 0

5ClevelandAFC North5.93-2.9 To go with our 2016 NFL predictions, FiveThirtyEight is previewing each division. RANKTEAMDIVISIONPROJECTEDACTUALDIFFERENCE AFC North fans are blessed with one of the NFL’s most exciting divisions. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals have all been successful and evenly matched, politely taking turns in the top spot. In fact, the AFC North is the only division that has never had a back-to-back-to-back champion: 3BaltimoreAFC North9.35-4.3 2015 WINS The Ravens’ 2015 misfortune was twofold. They did terribly in close games, with their first eight losses coming by margins of six, four, four, three, five, eight, two and two. They also had a ridiculous number of injuries. Neither of these issues were totally random; strategy can cost teams in close games, and players are more likely to get injured when they’re members of one of the NFL’s oldest rosters. But luck played a major part too, and the Ravens are a trendy bounceback candidate for 2016, with Vegas putting their over/under at 8.5 wins. We expect them to improve as well, but only to 7.6.Cleveland BrownsWhile AFC North has never had a repeat champion, it does have the most predictable bottom-feeder in the NFL: 2San DiegoAFC West8.44-4.4 How will your favorite NFL team do this year? See all of our predictions for the 2016 season » This year will not be the year that streak is broken. And while Cincinnati took the crown in 2015, we give them just a 36 percent chance of repeating.Pittsburgh SteelersIt’s hard not to think of the Steelers as a defensive team. The franchise that gave us the Steel Curtain also had the best sustained defense of the 21st century. From 2000 to 2012 they allowed the fewest yards in the NFL six times and finished in the top 10 every season. No longer. The Steelers have quickly transformed into an offense-first squad, 21st in yards against and 3rd in yards gained last season. They have the best wide receiver in the NFL and the best running back unit (after Le’Veon Bell wraps up his three-game suspension). They went 8-4 in 2015 when QB Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t out with an injury, and Vegas has them at 10-1 to win Super Bowl LI. That’s tied with Panthers and behind only the Patriots, Seahawks and Packers. Our biggest misses of 2015 4San FranciscoNFC West8.05-3.0 The Cleveland Browns have finished last in the AFC North for five straight years and in 11 of the last 14 seasons. It’s the kind of franchise that’s in a position to make some gambles, so this season they signed quarterback Robert Griffin III and made him their starting QB.The saga of RGIII has been such a bummer these last couple of seasons that it’s easy to forget just how great he was in 2012. As a rookie, Griffin led the league in yards per attempt (8.1), edging out Peyton Manning. He also tied Tom Brady for the league’s lowest interception rate (1.3 percent) and added 815 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. He closed out the season with seven straight wins to lead Washington to the playoffs, and if it were not for Adrian Peterson’s incredible 2,097-yard season, Griffin might have had a legitimate case for MVP.Griffin took huge steps backward in 2013 and 2014 and then got benched for a year. But if the 2016 version of RGIII can be three-quarters the player he was in 2012, he could be the best quarterback the Browns have had in years. It’s something to hope for, at least.VIDEO: How one spurned Rams fan found a new team Our preseason Elo projections are a little less bullish, putting Pittsburgh as the seventh-most-likely Super Bowl winner. The Steelers could improve from last season just by having Roethlisberger for all 16 games, but they’re without their starting running back for three games, plus receiver Martavis Bryant has been suspended for the year and veteran tight end Heath Miller retired. Bryant and Miller combined for 1,300 receiving yards in 2015.Cincinnati BengalsThere are a lot of ways an NFL franchise can be depressing. The Bills lost four straight Super Bowls. The Browns and Lions have never made it to one. And the Cincinnati Bengals are winless in their last seven playoff games, wasting some of the best seasons in the franchise’s history.Last year was especially brutal. The Bengals looked outstanding at the start, going 8-0 with wins over the Chiefs, Seahawks and Steelers. After their Week 9 victory over the Browns, the Bengals hit a new franchise Elo high of 1672. (This was only good for third-best Elo in the NFL at that moment, which itself is pretty depressing, if you think about it). They finished at 12-4 with a +140 point differential — the best regular season in franchise history — but they lost starting QB Andy Dalton to injury in Week 14.Everyone knew what was coming next. Like clockwork, the Bengals lost their Wild Card game for a fifth straight year. To refresh your memory on the specifics, Cincinnati trailed 15-0 entering the fourth quarter, pulled ahead 16-15, and and then committed not one but two egregious personal fouls to hand Pittsburgh a game-winning field goal. Cincinnati will carry over a lot of its talent from 2015, but very little pride.Baltimore RavensWhat happened to the Ravens? The 2014 squad was the 7th-best in the NFL per our final pre-Super Bowl Elo ratings, after a 10-6 season that ended at the hands of eventual champion New England. Going into 2015, we projected Baltimore to win 9.3 games, with a 55 percent chance of making the playoffs. They went 5-11. 1DallasNFC East9.84-5.8 read more

Army fitness slips but female soldiers close the gap on men

25 September 0

first_imgBritish soldiers This year in the Army, 18.8 per cent of women and 17.6 per cent of men failed one or more fitness tests The proportion of Army soldiers failing fitness tests has nearly doubled in three years amid concerns that personnel are losing focus because they are not being sent to war.Female troops are also narrowing the gap with their male counterparts after years of falling behind, The Telegraph can disclose. In 2013, 7,120 – or 9.6 per cent – of the 74,010 personnel who were made to complete personal fitness assessments failed at least one, according to figures released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). He said: “They are responsible for ensuring that their men are battle fit.” Col Kemp added that it was possible commanders “might see there’s less incentive to push it” now troops are not regularly being sent into combat. He said: “When they are deploying on operations it’s a matter of life and death. They may think that’s not the case if they are not going on operations as much, which is of course a mistake because they could go at any time.”But an Army source said in recent years there had been a greater focus on testing soldiers’ fitness and the figures could reflect troops who had not been checked for some time, suddenly finding they were being tested. It is understood that if a test is failed, personnel are put on programmes aimed at helping improve their fitness levels. A MoD spokesman said: “Over 90 per cent of our personnel are fit to be deployed on operations around the world at any time. “All our forces are educated in nutrition, diet and exercise in order to maintain a healthy weight, and in some circumstances additional measures are considered in order to achieve this.” In comparison, between January and mid-September this year 11,300 troops – around 17.7 per cent – out of a possible 63,910 tested failed one or more. When looking at body mass index, more than 31,900 serving personnel were also found to be overweight or obese in the last three years. Last night, Army sources suggested that the failure rate may have dramatically increased due to fewer operational deployments. The MoD said basic fitness tests had not changed over the past three years. All Army personnel are required to take personal fitness assessments, including sit-ups, press-ups and a 1.5-mile run, twice a year.Three years ago, just over 12 per cent of females tested failed at least once, while 9.4 per cent of men did. This year, 18.8 per cent of women and 17.6 per cent of men failed one or more assessments.   When they are deploying on operations it’s a matter of life and deathCol Richard Kemp Knowing that they don’t have a deployment in the next six months to Afghanistan probably does lead to people taking their foot off the gasRecently retired Army officer One recently retired Army officer suggested that soldiers were finding it more difficult to focus on keeping fit because they knew they were not going on operations. He said: “Operations sharpen the mind and focus your efforts on keeping fit – the prospect of going to Afghanistan was certainly an incentive to get fit. After all you don’t want to let your mates down by being unfit and not prepared. Being shot at is hard enough when you’re fit, let alone when you’re out of shape.”He went on: “Not having that focus, knowing that they don’t have a deployment in the next six months to Afghanistan probably does lead to people taking their foot off the gas.“Former colleagues are also constantly telling me how the lads are bored and morale is suffering. Low morale tends to lead to a lack of motivation.”Col Richard Kemp, a former commander of British troops in Afghanistan, said commanders must take the responsibility for any lack of fitness. Taco Bell Thank You For Suing Us

Taco Bell Thank You For Suing Us

21 September 0

first_imgTaco Bell has responded to charges that its taco filling is something other than beef with a simple message: “Thank You for Suing Us.” That was the headline of a full-page print ad taken out in a number of prominent papers today, including The New York Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. In smaller text, the ad, a letter from the company’s president, Greg Creed, promised to “set the record straight.” The ad carries a “Real Beef – Quality Guaranteed” logo. It continues,AdChoices广告The claims made against Taco Bell and our seasoned beef are absolutely false. Our beef is 100 percent USDA inspected, just like the quality beef you buy in a supermarket and prepare in your home. Creed goes a step further, breaking down the contents of the meat, which is made up of 88 percent beef and 12 percent other stuff,We start with USDA-inspected quality beef (88 percent). Then add water to keep it juicy and moist (three percent). Mix in Mexican spices and flavors, including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder, and cocoa powder (four percent). Combine a little oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, citric acid, and other ingredients that contribute to the flavor. After that quick recipe, the letter takes a slightly harsher turn, with Creed promising to “take legal action against those who have made false claims against our seasoned beef.” If there’s a real takeaway here, it’s to never mess with a man’s seasoned beef.last_img read more

From the beginning of the infrastructure works and for the nearly two years that they lasted, several small businesses lost their livability.“Behind every small business is a family, and all those families make a community. We believe our communities are worth protecting and our businesses worth saving. When small business thrives we all thrive. So let’s Save Small Business together,” she said.Sydney seat candidate, Fiona Douskou. They have one tracked minds in most departments and don’t have any real accountability to the people. The Small Business Party was borne of this need – to have a genuine representative in the upper house, a voice of reason on legislation and decision making to ensure that no-one pays an unfair price for progress. The Small Business Party does not support the expansion of toll roads across Sydney and will work to STOP both the proposed Northern Beaches Link and the Western Harbour Tunnel. Officials Stay Off The Roads Until Icy Weather Subsides

Officials are urging residents to stay home.Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner addressed the situation at a press conference this morning.“Please don’t get on the road 3 or 4 o’clock because you’ve been at home all morning, and you get a little restless,” he said. “We’re asking you to stay off the roads for the rest of today and into tonight. Stay off the roads.”For the latest weather forecast, Molly Merrifield joined Houston Matters. She’s a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Houston/Galveston office. She said temperatures fell throughout the day instead of warming up in the afternoon, like it does most days. And temperatures will continue to fall over night.Merrifield added that, while ice and freezing rain are the main concern for much of Greater Houston, some places of the region — mainly the northern parts — could even see accumulations of a few tenths of an inch of snow and up to an inch. Then, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett updated the road conditions and emergency response efforts around the county. He said county personnel have been preparing for this for several days and have closed high overpasses that were at highest risk for ice.“We live in the south and a day or so from now this will all be gone,” Emmett said. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says people in outside the Houston city limits within Harris County can call TranStar’s Motorist Assistance Program at 713-CALL-MAP (713-225-5627). Using the bottom half of an empty plastic soda bottle as a target, they practice putting and chipping the ball. Their flag is an old T-shirt.“They are good in the short game,” said Morudu. The field, surrounded by houses and small businesses, is too small to practice long drives.Atlahang Lebeloane, 13, has become the star player of the group. His parents hope this newly discovered talent will turn into a profession.“I want to win a cup,” said Lebeloane, who idolizes American player Tiger Woods. Morudu has been trying to raise about $100 to enter Lebeloane and other children into competitions, where he hopes they’ll be spotted by a professional school. Appreciation Driving 47T Equity Economy

first_img Black Knight Equity Homeowner HOUSING mortgage 2017-04-03 Rachel Williams Continued increases in home prices is driving a the strongest equity market in a decade, according to the latest Mortgage Monitor Report by Black Knight Financial Services. The report, looking at February numbers, found that appreciation nationally has generated $4.7 trillion in equity available to borrowers, the highest it’s been since 2006.Appreciation is also having a profound effect on the number of underwater borrowers, Black knight reported. An annual home price appreciation of 5.5 percent in 2016 helped raise number of U.S. mortgage holders with tappable equity to 39.5 million. Two thirds of that equity belongs to borrowers with current interest rates below today’s 30-year interest rate, and 78 percent belongs to borrowers with credit scores of 720 or higher.Overall, Black Knight reported, the total U.S. loan delinquency rate in February was 4.21 percent, a 1 percent drop from January. Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia, and New Jersey had the highest rates of delinquency; Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Colorado, and North Dakota had the lowest.Ben Graboske Black Knight executive vice president for Black Knight’s Data & Analytics division, said that the current equity landscape, in conjunction with a higher interest rate environment, will likely affect mortgage lending trends over the coming year.“December 2016 marked 56 consecutive months of annual home price appreciation,” Graboske said. “That served to not only lift an additional one million formerly underwater homeowners back into positive equity throughout the year, but also increased the amount of tappable equity available to U.S. mortgage holders by an additional $568 billion.”The nearly 40 million homeowners with tappable equity have current combined loan-to-value ratios of less than 80 percent, Black Knight reported. And cash-out refinance data suggests that they have been increasingly tapping that equity, though perhaps more conservatively than homeowners had in the past.In Q4, $31 billion in equity was extracted from the market via first lien refinances. While that was the most equity drawn in over eight years, borrowers are still tapping equity at less than a third of the rate they were back in 2005, and they’re doing so more prudently. Post-cash-out loan-to-value-ratio was 65.6 percent, the lowest on record. However, Graboske said, prepayment speeds, historically a good indicator of refinance activity, have dropped by nearly 40 percent since Jan.1, in the face of today’s higher interest rate environment.“The last time interest rates rose as much as they have over the past few months, we saw cash-out refinances decline by 50 percent, but rate-term refinances decline by 75 percent,” he said. “Based on past behavior, we may see a decline in first lien cash-out refinance volume, but it’s still likely that cash-out refinances‒‒and purchase loans‒‒will drive the lion’s share of prepayment activity over the coming year in any case. During a joint press conference with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday Trump said the US will not accept the attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria In a statement issued on Tuesday Ishaq Akintola director MURIC said Trump’s statement “is prejudiced parochial and unpresidential” Akintola also claimed Trump “is luring Nigerian Christians into bolder confrontation” with Muslims “It is sheer interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation Trump has a bully’s instinct” the statement read in part “If this is the same Trump who called African countries ‘shithole’ the same American president who threatened to wipe out North Korea the same US leader who banned Muslims from entering his country the same Republican who said “Torture works ok folks” Nigerians must be wary of America’s involvement in their affairs “We should remember that Nigeria did not get the required support from the moderate and cool-headed Barrack Obama in its war against terrorism We should therefore not expect any from Trump who treats vulnerable nations with contempt and has no respect for African countries Unless Nigerians unite this country will become America’s ‘shithole’ “Trump’s comment on killings in Nigeria implies that he would prefer that it is Muslims alone who are being killed We refuse to believe that a whole American president does not know the true situation on ground in this country He who knows but pretends not to know has his own secret agenda Nigerian Muslims are not intimidated by Trump’s comment We only sympathise with those who will be gullible enough to become Trump’s ‘suckers’ Posterity will judge us “Nigerian Christians should not allow themselves to be deceived by Trump’s comment The advanced countries of today will not compromise the secret of their technological advancement Western countries will not teach us what will benefit our people They will only teach us what will divide us in order to further render us debilitated impoverished and helpless “Nay they will give us fish but refuse to teach us how to fish They will scatter us like wild oats and then give us weapons to kill ourselves Then under the guise of rendering humanitarian services they will take over our land our oil our rich culture and force homosexualism and lesbianism down our throats but at that time it will be too late to resist Mark our words “Trump is only using religion to turn Nigeria into another Iraq Just as former US President Bush used Sunni-Shiite dichotomy to destroy Iraq just to lay his hands on Iraq’s oil field Trump is also eyeing Nigeria’s oil His plan is to use Christian-Muslim divide to set Nigeria ablaze But Nigerians should remember that decades after the invasion of Iraq that country is yet to experience stability Years after the killing of Ghadaffi Libya is yet to find its feet The guns are still booming in Syria and the world holds its breadth each time North Korea sneezes “It is our contention that Trump is luring Nigerian Christians into bolder confrontation with their Muslim neighbours We warn that the West African sub-region will be shaken to its foundation if Nigerian Christians swallow Trump’s bait The extension to Nigeria of America’s crusade which brought ruins to Iraq Syria Afghanistan Libya and Sudan will have dire consequences on the whole African continent” William Brinkman testifies before a Congressional committee earlier this year D Malakoff/Science More change is in store atop the Department of Energy (DOE) On 15 March William Brinkman head of DOE’s Office of Science announced that he will resign his post on 12 April Brinkman says he decided to leave DOE for personal reasons "My wife and I have plans on what we’d like to do that we’ve put off for 4 years" Brinkman says Most immediately Brinkman says he plans to spend part of the summer working with his wife to restore their summer home in Loveladies New Jersey which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy The Obama administration has yet to announce Brinkman’s successor who must be confirmed by the Senate Brinkman joined DOE in June 2009 Prior to taking command of the Office of Science Brinkman was a senior research physicist at Princeton University Before that Brinkman worked at Bell Laboratories where he served as the head of the physics research division and later as vice president of research In a 15 March e-mail to DOE staff members (see below) Brinkman detailed a number the Office of Science’s achievements in recent years including the establishment of DOE’s 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers which were selected in 2009 to push the research boundaries on clean energy topics such as solar power electricity storage carbon sequestration and nuclear power At the same time Brinkman made it clear that Washington’s budget battles are beginning to take their toll on the nation’s R&D "As I leave office my biggest concern remains the erosion of science funding in the United States when most of the industrialized countries of the world are increasing funding" he wrote In a testimony before the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies on 5 March Brinkman expanded on his concerns noting that the recently enacted across-the-board cuts known as the sequester will mean cuts of $215 million for the Office of Science Those cuts he said will force cancellation of the FastForward initiative designed to accelerate progress toward the next generation of supercomputers; elimination of up to 60 graduate student awards at universities; a delay of planned upgrades at the Linac Coherent Light Source in California; cancellation of three funding calls in the biological and environmental research program; and a likely slowdown of the delivery of hardware slated for ITER the international fusion reactor "Sequestration greatly endangers the scope of our scientific program as well as our ability to keep our construction projects on time and on budget" Brinkman concluded Mark Ratner a materials chemist at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois and a member of DOE’s Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee says that Brinkman’s leadership will be missed "Bill brought insight creativity hard work and a stellar history as a physicist to the Office of Science" Ratner writes in an e-mail "He has led the Office with brilliance and with creativity The sequester has made the job more difficult since it was designed to be irrational (and not to be implemented)" News of Brinkman’s departure brought a wistful reaction from some staff members on Capitol Hill who dealt with him regularly He had earned a reputation as a trustworthy and down-to-earth advocate for DOE’s science programs But he also became known for his soft-spoken demeanor; during hearings lawmakers routinely had to remind Brinkman to speak up or get closer to the microphone so that they could understand what he was saying The exchanges even earned him a moniker form one science lobbyist: "Dr Mumbles" Brinkman says that he’s open to returning to Princeton University or the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he and his wife intend to move after leaving Washington Here is the full text of Brinkman’s farewell e-mail: From: SCCAST Sent: Friday March 15 2013 11:39 AM Subject: Moving On It’s time for me to move on Now that the new DOE leadership team is taking shape I am writing to let you know I will be moving on My last day at DOE will be Friday April 12 Between now and then I will be transitioning and taking some personal time and will be away from the office much of the time between March 22 and April 12 As I leave office my biggest concern remains the erosion of science funding in the United States when most of the industrialized countries of the world are increasing funding When I came to DOE I started with a principle that I have used when I changed positions in the past namely that I should assume that all the people in my organization are good at their jobs There is no question that the staff in SC has lived up to that initial expectation We have made some changes but overall I believe SC is a very sound organization today So what did we accomplish Actually a lot Many new exciting scientific advances have occurred: the first X-ray FEL the Higgs particle was discovered strongly enhanced use of simulation in materials science discovery of new aspects of the nature of the quark-gluon plasma and a host of new results on possible energy technologies have been discovered to mention just a few ITER has a new leadership team in place and construction is well on its way Overall our international collaborations have increased and we have sharpened our focus on making these strategically important Probably the largest changes have occurred in our approach to science relevant to energy technologies The Energy Frontier Research Centers two hubs and the biofuels centers are established and are working effectively I believe we have made considerable progress in getting our climate program integrated into the broader US government effort and I look forward to the next IPCC report in which our modeling will surely play a major role We have established "tech teams" to coordinate applied and basic science activities in technology areas important to the DOE energy mission that I believe will continue to have an important role as they already have in fostering funding opportunity announcements that are collaborative among the applied and basic science offices On the lab management side much has changed We have a new strong leadership team in place that is making many changes The processing of grants through our Chicago office has been greatly improved and is much more user friendly than in the past the organization at Oak Ridge has been moved forward more toward what we expect of a service center and several new site office leaders have been appointed It continues to be important to exploit modern communications and data systems to improve operational effectiveness and we are on a path to consolidate IT functions as an important element of this strategy I congratulate the PAMS team for the dedication and leadership they have shown in making PAMS a reality In our internal SC headquarters organization we have recruited new leadership for and have greatly improved our public relations and human resources organizations The national laboratories have grown stronger over the last four years The multipurpose labs are not only doing excellent science but also are broadening their impact on the country through increasing coupling to American industry and greater involvement in national security We continue to manage these laboratories through our annual strategic plan reviews and the grading system which has received praise from within the Department and in external reviews We have made careful judgments on whether to renew or compete lab contracts and have been successful in a number of cases I look forward to interacting with many of you as a function of time and wish the entire organization and all of DOE great success Sincerely Dr W F Brinkman Director Office of Science Mumbai:Declaring himself fully fit after recovering from a thigh muscle strain India’s number one male shuttler Kidambi Srikanth said on Saturday personally "It has been a really fantastic last 6-8 months; just one more tournament left for me this year and I want to do well in the last tournament that I have I feel I did great but there’s still a lot to come" he said Looking ahead to next year Srikanth said he wanted to take a break and train well before the Commonwealth Games Asian Games and World Championships "Its definitely a big year Commonwealth Games Asian Games World Championships and Superseries Tournaments have also been increased to 50 I really want to keep myself fit for the big events That’s what I am thinking about that’s my priority to be 100 percent fit Before the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games I want to take a break train hard and then be fit for the event" "I had not really pushed myself in the beginning Had slowly started to push and gradually improved on fitness but overall the (self) belief is what has made a huge difference" he said when asked what was the key to his outstanding performance this year He stayed clear of controversy over the cramped scheduling of events that was recently criticised by India’s national coach Pullela Gopichand "The tournaments have increased but at the end of it I don’t want to comment as its a BWF (Badminton World Federation) decision and I don’t want to get into any controversy" he said He also said he would start practising the new serve to be made mandatory by BWF after the end of the India Open in Delhi early next year "Its going to be tough I have not tried it myself yet I will try it after the India Open Superseries I have heard they are implementing it with the All England (Super Series event) Its going to be very challenging Its upto BWF to decide on the rules" he explained He also hailed the inputs of new singles coach Mulyo Handayo from what to expect“The last half hour’s been kind of a blur” he said after getting off the phone with the governor “I look forward to working with the Senate the entire Legislature and the citizens and I have a solid base at all” he said “I assume that every day is a new day and the people that voted against me or not in my favor did for a reason and I would like to figure out what some of those reasons are to see if we can reach a consensus”Sen Donald Schaible R-Mott who served on the confirmation committee said Melicher’s answers during his Jan 28 confirmation hearing indicated he “seemed to have a grasp on the problems but he did not have a clear idea how to address them”He said Melicher’s general attitude was that North Dakota’s higher education system has “a few hiccups” but generally the colleges are doing a good job“This is where the committee would have to differ We feel that there are some real issues and concerns with our higher educational system” he said listing fraudulent enrollment reporting and degrees data breaches tuition increases and open meetings violations among other concernsSen John Warner D-Ryder who also served on the committee and supported Melicher’s confirmation said the divided recommendation “does not truly represent the committee on the actual nominee but rather represents the near unanimous frustration with the general culture of action is criticized and scrutinized with a fine-toothed comb Finding people of integrity and intelligence to serve on this largely volunteer board is a difficult task”Another committee member Sen Kelly Armstrong R-Dickinson said Melicher had an impressive resume but performed poorly in the interview“His inability to answer questions regarding recent issues and future direction of higher education in North Dakota were troubling to me” he saidSenate Majority Leader Rich Wardner R-Dickinson said the Senate elevated the confirmation process by holding Melicher’s confirmation hearing in the Capitol’s largest meeting room and asking him tough questions He said the committee’s recommendation “was not petty politics”“The issue was he didn’t answer the questions as complete as I think we needed to have them to know that he understands the direction of higher ed” Wardner said “The board of higher ed needs to drive the bus They need to lead the parade It should be the board the chancellor and then the campuses”Sen Jerry Klein R-Fessenden who chaired the committee said Melicher could have answered the questions more completely but deserves a chance to show he can fix the board’s problems “I’ll be honest that wasn’t his best interview” said Sen Tim Flakoll R-Fargo “But he is very measured in his approach and I think if he is on the board we will have a change and great things will happen”Melicher said he was committed to mending the long-troubled relationship between state legislators and board members“From what I understand in the past the trust was not there” he the gym has probably noticed that the stats on your wrist rarely match what’s being shown on the treadmill or elliptical That’s part of what Apple is hoping to solve by making it possible for the Apple Watch to communicate directly with compatible workout equipment through its GymKit program which is just starting to appear in fitness clubs after it was announced in June GymKit is a platform that makes it possible to sync your Apple Watch with certain cardio exercise machines allowing the watch and the equipment to exchange information so that they can provide more accurate feedback The program is starting to launch in the United States after first appearing in Australia last month and the United Kingdom earlier in December GymKit takes a page from other Apple services like Apple Pay just tap your watch against the machine and your watch should pair it if it’s compatible For now GymKit will only work with cardio machines like treadmills ellipticals indoor bikes and stair-steppers from companies like Life Fitness Technogym Matrix and Star Trac among others Machines that support Apple’s technology will display a corresponding logo on screen to let you know that you can connect your Apple Watch Read more: Review: Apple’s New Watch Only Partly Frees You From Your Phone But GymKit availability in the US is limited for now it’s now available on cardio machines made by Technogym at Life Time Athletic’s fitness facility at Sky Club in New York City The chain has plans to support it in 14 new clubs in 2018 as well as its existing 130 locations via a software update Equinox will also be rolling out GymKit next year and plans to include GymKit-enabled cardio machines made by Life Fitness in all of its new clubs With GymKit the Apple Watch can sync your entire workout to your wrist even if you don’t pair it until the middle or end of your exercise session as Apple showed during a recent demonstration The bigger benefit though is the fact that allowing your Apple Watch to share data with exercise equipment and vice versa can help both devices provide more precise observations about your workout The reason your Apple Watch and the treadmill at the gym don’t always show matching numbers is simply because they’re usually working off of different information If you’re starting a run by pressing the Quick Start option on the treadmill for example the treadmill likely doesn’t know personal details like you’re height gender or weight as the Apple Watch does This can factor into how calorie burn is calculated which would explain why the statistics shown on your watch aren’t always the same as those shown on gym equipment Similarly the Apple Watch can’t tell if you’re running on an incline on the treadmill even if you’re using the third-generation Apple Watch which has a barometric altimeter Apple also isn’t the first to create wearable devices that can sync with workout equipment Life Fitness machines were already capable of connecting to popular fitness apps and platforms but could only do so through its LFConnect app GymKit appears to be a more ambitious approach that seeks to make it simpler to sync your Apple Watch in real time without having to download individual apps from equipment manufacturers Although it might take some time before GymKit becomes common Apple did say during its Worldwide Developer Conference in June that its equipment
